Relationship to Diabetes
think this might be a better board place for this

Hello - first post so I hope this is in the right place

I should start by saying I'm not diagnosed as diabetic or pre diabetic currently

I've been feeling a bit out of sorts in the day time for a few weeks ( bit spacey and anxious some days and fine on others ) and I thought it was just because I am under a lot of stress at the moment but I decided to home test my blood sugar levels using my partners Glucomen kit after a random dinner table discussion about pre diabetes

We went out for a massive Chinese meal with dessert last night and I did eat more sugar than usual but my results have freaked me out a bit

Waking result at 8.30am - 8.4
I then ate a plain bagel at 8.30am
9.30am result - 9.2
2 hours result at 10.30am - 7.4

My doc can't fit me in until Monday but I wondered if I should repeat the test tomorrow or wait until my doc apt Monday

No idea why I thought home testing was a good idea but feel uber stressed now !!

Any thoughts ?

Hi karenlisam, welcome to the forum 🙂 A waking (also known as 'fasting') result over 7.0, if a regular thing, would normally be enough for a diagnosis of diabetes, but it would need to be confirmed by the doctor. The post-meal results you have given are not too bad - you rose a little, then fell back to below your waking level. The doctor would probably want to do some more tests before giving a diagnosis.

Try not to worry, if you are diagnosed then it would appear you have caught things early. In any event, I would suggest that you consider following a diet and exercise regime that will help keep your blood sugar levels under control, such as a low GI or GL diet (The GL Diet for Dummies is a good introduction) - you are welcome to post here if you have any questions or concerns! Good luck with your appointment, please let us know how things go 🙂

Welcome to the forum.

To hopefully alleviate some of your concern, let me contrast your readings so far with mine at diagnosis.

I was diagnosed in October 2009 with Type 2 diabetes with a BG reading of around 25mmol/L. My HBA1c at that time was 13.3% (or 122mmol/mol). I was not a healthy bunny!

Following diagnosis, I lost weight, upped my exercise and ate sensibly (mostly!). My BG readings now never exceed 7mmol/L and my last HBA1c was 5.8% (or 40mmol/mol). I am now healthier and fitter than I've been for a long, long time.

So, try not to worry.

Andy 🙂

Thanks guys

This mornings was 6.8 so lower but still high I think so I will see what happens on Monday

Hi Karen

I hope it's nothing, but you're doing the right thing by seeing GP for any investigations eg they might take blood from vein to check HbA1c (measure of approximately average blood glucose levels for past few weeks). They'll know other relevant factors from your personal and family health record - or may have to ask you some details - in order to make best plan of action.

Heavy food doesnt do anybody an good ! Good luck at Docs 🙂
