Hi, I thought about getting life insurance a couple of years ago but it coincided with my pre diabetes and a stressful time. I started talking to an insurance company but the medical questions were really stressful so I bravely ran away! I am thinking of trying again as I would like to get insurance cover so that my mortgage would be covered for my husband and son if I die. Does anyone know if this possible anywhere? I’m 48 year old mother of one with type 2. Thanks
There was no problem with life insurance or any other insurance for me - but my diabetes is under control and so there are no complications to consider.
Most people living with diabetes have encountered difficulties arranging insurance, whether it is life assurance, income protection and family income benefit insurance or travel insurance. Please note: this section aims to provide you with general information to assist in obtaining insurance. It...
Like some others, mine was with Nationwide and is part of my membership package, so free apart from the monthly fee. I had to pay an age premium as well as a medical one. The age premium was £75 and the medical upgrade £93.13 (not just for diabetes but my other medical conditions as well). It covered the whole year so very good value. I know my friends got quotes far higher, just for a 10 day holiday.
Mine was around £50 for an annual upgrade for type 2, and taking statins for cholesterol.
On top of the £13 a month regular payment.
But that's for Worldwide travel.insurance, and European and UK car breakdown cover.
I'm not really concerned about either type 2 or statins being a problem to me, I could have asked for any pre existing medical condition to be excluded, but I figured I didn't want to have the stress of arguing if I did get hospitalised for anything at any stage.
I used a specialist broker for life cover. Several years ago, and unfortunately no longer have contact details to pass on, but they had no trouble finding a policy for an early-40's T1. My policy is with Legal and General.
Worth investigating packaged bank accounts for travel insurance. I'm with Lloyds, and get worldwide cover including watersports and skiing (not that I've needed that for a long time!), with no requirement for additional screening for diabetes. I had no trouble getting standalone travel insurance previously, but had a steep screening fee every time.

Has anyone used Bluezone Insurance before? They are a new UK life insurance company offering personalised term cover for people living with Type 2 diabetes. You can apply directly on their website and it only takes 5 minutes to get an online quote - without the need for lengthy calls with an advisor.
Not Life Insurance, but as others have said I had no issue adding to my travel insurance. I have it through the bank (monthly fee covering this and other benefits) and it's a very comprehensive policy. It was about £80 extra for the year based on my T2 Diabetes and medication taken for Cholesterol and blood pressure.
Sarah, unless they said, "never ever", you may be able to get cover now you have established a management strategy.
Life underwriters look at risk (increased by your diagnosis) and will take account of any complications you may or may not have. Around diagnosis, they have nothing to go on, in terms of how you will handle it, and therefore how much of an additional risk you will be.
Now you have some history they can look at, they can at least have a go at assessing your risk. Companies also vary, depending on their claims experiences and their policy holder profiles.
You have little to lose in applying again (maybe to another company, guided by an independent financial advisor). If they decline you, you didn't have the cover anyway. If they offer you terms you can decide how to proceed from there. Pre-existing medical can lead to a premium loading, or the application of exclusions
