The 6-month-old black Labrador bounds around the room chasing a ball and performing other tricks on command.
But when the playful puppy puts on his vest, he is quiet and still, staying close to his owner.
?He is on the job and knows what he is supposed to do,? said Shanna Withers, of Kings Mountain.
The Labrador?s job is to alert Shanna?s son, Tyler, when his blood sugar is too high or too low. Tyler was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes Oct. 2, 2007. Controlling his sugar has been a constant struggle for Shanna Withers and her husband, Ty. The dog is trained to detect fluctuations in a person?s blood sugar 20-45 minutes before it registers on a monitor.
