Knowing that I was in for a big spike but as a learning exercise, I had some shepherds pie, not an awful lot of mash, and then a small piece of birthday cake with a topping of fairly sweet icing. I was 6.2 before and a whopping 14.6 two hours later. After a wee glass of red wine to chew over the result, I was back down to 5.6 an hour later. What was the main culprit here, mash or cake? Or a lethal cocktail?

Difficult to say, but for my money probably the cake, an awful lot of refined carbs (including sugar).

I struggle with mashed potato too (more significantly than cake). But I suspect it was the combination and it all added together. Glad you were back into better numbers so promptly.

I'd say both myself for the mash and cake.

My biggest spike was with weetabix and milk went from a 7.0 to a whopping 20.9

Weirdly I tend to hypo with mash, I have no idea why. Cake makes me go off the scale. You came down really quickly though which was great! I had a spike of 22 at the weekend, I skipped breakfast (woops!). I once had a BG of 33 and my monitor just said HI (I went to the hospital and they did a "proper" blood test to get the actual figure). It seems like an inappropriately cheerful response for an unreadable BG level LOL

Not sure there - possibly the lot - if not then I'd say the iced cake would have been the main culprit - as for myself mash potatoes and cake will see a bgl rise. Good experiment though Browser. x
