Moderator note. A side conversation split from this thread: https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/board...from-two-decades-of-controversy.105300/page-2

" contemporary evidence tends to support the notion that lipid-lowering therapy with statins does not significantly alter cognitive function in medium-term studies. Long-term studies (≥10 years of follow-up) are currently pending, however, their implementation is of paramount importance."

'Tends to support the notion.'.. hardly strong evidence?

maybe the "quacks and conspiracy theorists" might have a point?

Not really.
Got any links to the studies so you can prove it does?
Real ones?
If not..........

I'm sorry chaps but this sort of conversation is a bit futile. Save it for the dark web and facebook. Endless quoting of people representing the extremes will get you nothing more than more argument. Real issues, which need resolving move towards a consensus.

It was bad enough before the days of the internet when I worked in the nuclear industry. We just got used to, and for the sake of our sanity, ignored the endless speculation and daft inferences drawn from selective quoting of sources with limited knowledge of the reality of how the industry works. As a silly example, I well remember Greenpeace making much noise about how they were going to prove the industry was a filthy, dangerous, polluter by taking their own samples from sea at the end of the Sellafield outfall pipeline. As we came over the fell on the way to work we could see the boat. Two things we knew...first was that the pipeline discharged very little and second the boat was parked miles from the end of the pipe! When they found out that their hype was unjustified they quietly moved away.

Believe me, there are no big conspiracies. Sometimes there are **** ups and sometimes time moves on and social attitudes change and some big industries get a bit out of step. If they do not change they collapse.

Pfizer was fined. That's not a "conspiracy theory" it's a simple fact.

Pharma companies exist to make a profit.
I don't think that is in doubt either. Do you?

Well, I'm going out with more than I was born with hopefully.
Everything on earth exists to make a profit somewhere.
Even the moss on your lawn makes a profit out of killing the grass.
(Even the beef industry exists to make a profit)
"Profit" isn't a swear word to me.

Again nor to me.. why do you always have to misrepresent what other people say in order to "win" your argument.

I simply asked you if you thought that Pharma companies were primarily there for the benefit of humanity or the benefit of their shareholders. I know which I'd go for.

If they don't benefit humanity, they'll cease to exist.
But I guess that depends on your definition of humanity.

Everyone strives to have savings.
We put money in a bank, they invest it, we're all shareholders in something.
Very few of us would hand out all our money to a stranger.
Equally. very few of us would invest in a business that promised to give it away for us.

My investments would certainly go to a pharma that gave back a few percent, and kept open, not one that promised to be bankrupt next year.

If they don't benefit humanity, they'll cease to exist.
No they won't providing they can convince humanity that treating symptoms rather than root causes is the way to go.

That's why they have spent billions recruiting the medical profession.
And politicians

They have succeeded very well.

My observation was about the argument in the round and not about any specific issue. Generalising from the particular very rarely has any merit.

That is my last comment on this thread.

Hello,

Is it OK to chip in? (Newbie alert.) I see these debates all the time.

Yes, I’m cynical. But also dependant on insulin. (No two ways about it.) My basal is what it is. Dosing for carbs? Let’s just say I get better results with protein so opt out on most the “fillers..”

“One big conspiracy..” No, not in my view. What there is are some clever “world changers” working in a lab & funded.. Business takes its slice of the “pie.” There are individual vested interests. But the “brains.” (Working in the lab.) end up jaded.

The guy that invented PCR testing (Kary Mullis? As an example.) dissed his own invention back in the 1990s. He died in 2019. August. His video in the mid 90s used (in part.) to dispute PCR testing for covid was in full clearly homophobic when watched in full.. it was also a talk on HIV at that time. (The video footage quality & dress code of students at the talk alerted me to the age of the clip?)
He got a ten grand bonus from the company for the development he spent his time in the “lab” for. Also his long term partner dumped him due to the neglect from the amount of “time in the lab.”

Weighing it up. Kary had an “axe to grind.” So what else am I to think about everything else.

Please find something tangible.. “”Alien autopsies” don’t concern me.”

All business are in it to make profits, its beyond silly to think there's some big conspiracy going on in pharmaceutical industry.

Sorry to sound “balshy.” But yep, that’s how it goes. Utilising some clever “boffins” with no other way or funding to do “what they do?” I’m dependent on insulin. No other choice but accept what’s happening & use to my advantage.
Thank you, Banting.
