A 4-year-old Mason County boy is being credited with saving the life of his mother.

On Monday, sometime between 1 and 2 p.m., 28-year-old Shannon Jones was cleaning her Rectorville home when she suffered a low blood sugar spell caused by type I diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic disease in which there are high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood because of the body's inability to produce insulin.

Jones was diagnosed as a diabetic when she was only 4 years old and has to keep a close eye on her blood sugar levels.

"I was sweeping the floor," she said of the incident earlier this week. "I had a pile of dirt on it. That's the last thing I remember. I didn't even realize my sugar had dropped so low. The heat must have contributed to it."
