Hi Guys

I know I should know this, but, in an ideal world how much would you expect your BG to vary through the day from waking, eating, overnight etc etc.

I know I'm supposed to be aiming between 4 and 7 for fasting, but then once I've eaten how much should my BG go up by and back down again?

I assume the smallest number possible, but clarification would help.

I think that's something you sort of have to decide for yourself.

I'd prefer to stay out of double figures if possible (so if an earlier error means I'm high before a meal I'll try to wait till its come down a bit before eating).

As for meals, I prefer it when I don't rise much more than 3mmol/L if possible (ha!) So that if I start in the 6's I'd only go up to the 9's.

At least that's the hope 🙄
 
Thats really helpful - at least it gives me an idea.

While my starting levels are 10-13 in a morning, its difficult to get them low, but if I can make sure my meals are not having more than 3mmol/L worth of an effect, hopefully once i start with a lower number, I'll have the fluctuations worked out as best I can.

Perhaps.....
 
The NHS/DUK guidelines suggest aiming for similar-ish meal rises:

4-7 before meals and less than 8.5 by 2 hours after eating.

At the extremes that suggests a rise of only 1.5mmol/L (if you were at the top end before a meal), but I suggest that actually they are saying that a meal rise of something like 2-3mmol/L is not unlikely.

Apologies I'd not noticed you were T2, in which case waiting for an insulin correction to kick in may not be an option for you (unless you are on insulin of course!)
 
I would basically agree with Mike. If you can keep below 10 then you should be pleased with yourself. If you are basically on Lantus and I think you are still adjusting the dose, you HAVE to control your BG via diet/exercise. So if you are naughty at one meal you may find that you have high readings for more than 1 day. If you have high readings in the morning then there is little you can do to get it down, I tend to skip breakfast (or have something on carby) if I'm above 8 in the morning and hope that gets me into the 5s by lunch. Lunch will be ham and salad and a packet of crisps, that will take me to just below 8 (the crisps send me up by 2 fairly consistently).
 
Which really brings us back to the basics of 'Test, Review, Adjust' doesn't it ?
