Sorry to hear that Bez. Has Diesel been given any medication?

There are many diabetic pets in the world so don't worry too much, its very manageable with the correct treatment just as it is in humans xx

Sorry to hear this @Bez

We don’t have much expeirence of pets with diabetes on the forum unfortunately.

I hope your little ball of fluff bounces back soon, and you quickly get used to the treatment regime.

Hi @Bez and welcome to the forum. With the correct treatment I am sure your cat Diesel will be on the mend soon. As @everydayupsanddowns most people who use this forum are living or caring for someone with diabetes so there isn't much experience of pets.

Fingers crossed Diesel will be back to their normal self soon.

I'm so sorry, what does he get to eat then? My daughter's cat has kidney problems and has to have special food, Royal Canin. It's very difficult not to feel they are deprived, we always want to give him treats, if you rustle a paper bag he thinks it's Dreamies. 🙂 Your cat will be okay with you to look after him (or her).

Hi @Bez, my border terrier was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 14. I quickly got the hang of injecting her and she happily lived another 3 years, even after developing COPD, a reduced trachea and losing most of her eyesight. I was always worried that I wouldn't know when she'd had enough, but in the end it was quite obvious, and I'm so glad I forked out the small fortune on her medication for 3 years. Hope Diesel responds as well as Betsy did.

My cat diesel has just been diagnosed with diabetes....feeling upset scared and worried
Hi Bez,

If affordable, would it be a help to get a freestyle libre fitted to diesel? it would enable your vet (and you) to closely monitor blood sugar levels for a couple of weeks or more. It would certainly help initially, until you can get the basal insulin sorted so blood sugars are at least level during the 24hr day.

If you have a look on this forum and search for the freestyle libre. It's just a 2 penny size disc which adheres to the skin and is scanned with a graph producing reader, giving 24 hrs a day output.

Cats are obligate carnivores - has yours been fed on foods containing starch?
Decades ago I decided to feed a haggard looking stray on minced fish and meat - thinking it might have no teeth, and it recovered wonderfully - then someone took it in, fed it normal catfood and it died in a week.

Err @Amity Island - I don't think so! I don't know for starters how you'd get a cat to stay still long enough to shave a large enough patch of fur, let alone how much a feline body resembles a human one in terms of whether the interstitial layer is at the same depth or shows glucose up with the same time delay.

I was astonished, too, but if you do a web search you'll find people who seem to have done it with some success.

(I'm guessing 14 days of the sensor staying there is very much an aspiration rather than an expectation.)

Theres a Type 1 on Facebook that's cats not long been diagnosed and they had it between the shoulder blades of their cat with great success, also a lad I know his vet suggested it as a method for his dog which he did with great success xx

My friend’s cat also has diabetes, they don’t seem to have any problems now. They did have to change their cat carer for when they go away as the usual lady didn’t want to do the injections. My neighbour’s dog also has diabetes, he was diagnosed a couple of years ago and he too is doing well

Just before I was diagnosed Charlie, one of the Messengers at work - his bitch got diabetes and he had to chase her round the garden in a morning with a saucer to catch some pee to test!

When the vet needed a sample for my dad's dog I was dragooned into going over early in the morning to do it as neither my sister nor father could manage to collect any. As a veteran dog-sampler I am adept at shoving a receptacle under a weeing dog. :D Something for my CV!
