The secreted protein Postn (periostin) is capable of inducing beta-cell regeneration, and it appears to play a critical role in pancreatic regeneration, making it a potential therapeutic target for diabetes, researchers reported
In a series of experiments in mice, Postn was found to be highly induced following partial pancreatectomy in the regeneration of areas containing mesenchymal stroma and tubular complexes. Postn-deficient mice were shown to exhibit impaired mesenchymal formation and reduced regeneration of pancreatic-beta-cells.
