Hi Everyone,
I am looking for some advice please. My partner is Type 1 Diabetic & i am trying my best to do as much research as possible, as he is not as forthcoming with information. What is the best food/drink to have when having/during/after a Hypo/Hyper.
I know its best to have 150ml of a sugary drink or 200ml of orange juice during a Hypo but how many carbs are best after this please?
And with a Hyper, is it best for him to just administer more insulin or is any food/drink best in this case?
Any advice would be very much appreciated, thank you

A hypo is best treated with fast acting carbs such as fruit juice or sweets (jelly babies are popular) followed by 15g of slower acting carbs such as a biscuit.
Hypers need to be treated with insulin.
I try to avoid eating anything until my levels have returned to normal. Unfortunately, food does not bring down blood sugar levels.

Hi and welcome

Drinking plenty of water and gentle exercise like a walk, can also help reduce high BG levels and help any insulin your partner has taken to correct the high to bring him down.
I find jelly babies and dextrose or Lift tablets very convenient to carry around in handbag and pockets to treat hypos rather that liquids which are more bulky and heavy and could leak if they have been there for a while unused. I also carry dried fruit like apricots, figs and prunes as top up carbs if levels are getting a bit low but not hypo.
Hypo treatments should be readily to hand and in particular by the bed because the last thing you need to do is try to negotiate the stairs during the night when you are sleepy and hypo or even just wander through a dark house looking for hypo treatment.... recipe for disaster.

Welcome to the forum

For a hypo a sugary drink such as 150ml cans of full sugar coke are quite good or jelly babies. For hyper a corrective dose of insulin (if your partner uses a bolus calculator it will know what correction dose is needed) (bolus calculators are either an app or in the BG meter)Drinking lots of water can sometimes help
