NoCarb

Active Member
hello!

I am trying to diet but I face some difficulties.

I have noticed that if I indulge in things like sweets, cakes, pizza, pasta, chips and other carby things, first I don't get satiation easily (I will over eat) and second, I will be hungry again quite soon and I will want to eat alot.

In other words, I have the impression that when I include carbs in my diet, I feel less satiated, I feel more frequently hungry and I eat larger amount of food.

For example, today in the morning, I ate one sausage roll, in half an hour one cinnamon bun and in half an hour a slice of pizza. All these must be at leasy 900kcal I assume. In one morning! And I would assume, eating 900kcal of food would make me satiated and not wanting to eat anything else for at least 6h. However that was not the case! Even immediatelly after eating all those foods, I did feel my stomach fullish, but not extremely satiated (I could eat more). And additionally, after 3h I felt very hungry!

Is this the case or I am paranoid about carbs? I wish I wouldn't have to limit carbs in my diet, because it's hard to avoid them. But, after trying low carb diet, I literally stopped craving food and my appetite was completely normalised (I ate smaller portions and made me feel fuller and last longer). And anytime I eat a steak or other fatty and meaty meal, I feel more satiated and last longer.

Is it that my body doesn't cope well with carbs? Is low carb for life the only way for me? I would like to be able to eat carbs whenever I like, but is any diet that includes carbs destined to fail for me, so I will be chasing my tail?

thanks!

I ate a baguette and after a couple of hours I am hungry, that's ridiculous, if I ate the same grams on steak I would last for the whole day!

Hi. It's well-known that carbs cause a sugar high and then a low that makes the body crave more - they are simply addictive. This is why many of us suggest a low-carb diet together with enough proteins and fats to keep you feeling full. Proteins and fats make you feel full for much longer than carbs. So, you are normal! BTW think carbs not calories as calories have no real meaning when eating as the body doesn't work like a test lab.

No it doesn't Dave! I've yet to see anyone ignite any food they have eaten - after they've eaten it LOL (though even Mary Berry applies a naked flame to her Crème Brulee before serving it, these days)

After fast-acting carbs, we all get a Hyper - followed by a dive to a reactive Hypo. If we're not diabetic and don't have impaired glucose tolerance of course, we haven't a clue it's happening - but, it still does !

So how can I ditch carbs?
I don't cook and it's impossible not to eat carbs! Everything has carbs in it, they are the cheapest material.

Not all carbs are equal. Carbohydrates from vegetables are good. If you eat pasta or rice, swapping to brown versions are good. They still have the same amount of carbohydrates but a lower Glycemic index so they don't spike your sugars.

"Foods low on the glycemic index (GI) scale tend to release glucose slowly and steadily. Foods high on the glycemic index release glucose rapidly"

That quote is from the link you put. The aim is to eat foods low on the Glycemic index therefore you feel fuller for longer and your blood sugars don't spike as high

Carbs make you hungry, you need protein and fat, the only things that fill me up and I never get full really. You'd think I had Prader Willi the way I can eat. :(

yeah but I posted the link to see that whole grain pasta and white pasta do not have significant difference, half of both of them is just sugar

Indeed, the problem is how can I ditch carbs?
It's impossible if you eat out, you cannot buy anything apart from pies, baguettes, noodles, etc.

It's all bollox, I can eat weetabix but others here it'll give a massive spike. Everyone is different and we need to test what we eat to work out what we can and what we can't eat. I know what my breakfast is everyday, I know what I can have for lunch and I know what that leaves me for dinner. I live out of hotels for 2/3rds of the month and can control my bgl by knowing what I can have. You need to work out what works for you and follow it, if you're going to put you're head in the sand and blame everything else then you'll always be the slave and never the master. If you think I'm being harsh then tough, it took me two months to reverse my diabetes so it can be done. Nothing is off limits just an amount of common sense.

Not sure what do you trying to say here, is it bollox that everything you eat out is filled with carbs? Or that what you can eat out may not spike me?

what you need to do is eat, then test 1hr and then 2hr. then you can build a profile of what works, I work a lot away from home but I know what I can eat when I'm away.

That's an untrue statement plenty of places sell fish, salads etc

Eating out can be hard but if you look there is places that will accommodate.

I was away for the weekend and they did the usual breakfast of cereals but also a fry up to well it was all grilled bar the eggs ruddy lovely too. Now for my coffee I have cream in it and I ask and I got so it's worth looking around for places to eat out at.

If they serve spuds with the meal I ask for extra veg instead.
If a salad I ask for the dressing on the side, they always add way to much and drown the poor thing.
If hankering after a burger not the bun that's what I have and I always get extra onions and veg when I do that. I was asked why I didn't want the bun of course I said why and they look surprised but some where very interested too.
Just to think I was frightened to eat out as well.

If I eat out I stick to steak and salads usually. It does help that it's my favourite really anyway. Eating carbs makes me feel quite ill, immediately too, and then later even worse, acid reflux etc. then the bloating, so not worth it so gord knows why I go on carb benders...a horrible addiction. I found eating out easier than eating in! They always have bacon and eggs if staying in hotels. 🙂 If you're having Chinese just have meat and vegetables and if an Indian just have a Korma, no rice or naan of course. Or if you'd rather eat carbs then eat like they did in WW2 when they were rationed. :D

fish? with a ton of batter? how low carb is that?
also you cannot eat plain salad! I want warm food, not cold salad
Erm there are plenty of places that do just a plain fish fillet of various kinds without batter or anything and yes you can eat just plain salad there is nothing wrong with that! And fyi you do get warm salads we are trying to help but you seem not to take anything on board

You can always pick the batter off. You don't have to have 0g carbs a day. It's not sustainable for many people.

A lot of people on here choose to do reduced carb, as that's much easier than NO carbs.

You can find tonnes of low carb recipes on Google, and there are lots on this forum under the food section 🙂

Realistically how often do you eat out? I know I don't eat out very often. But even if you do, pubs and bars etc often do steak, chicken, fish. I'm sure you can find low carb options. I've asked for veg instead of chips before with my food and most places are happy to oblige.

Vegetables are good carbs that ideally we all should probably eat more of! (I know I don't get my 5 a day!!)
