I've now been on metformin for three weeks and have noticed I'm belching/burping an awful lot more.Is this usual?

Yes I think that is not an uncommon side effect along with a dodgy stomach.
Taking with food may help, some find mid meal best.

Many people find that any side effects ease off after a few weeks as their body becomes used to the medication.
If the burping continues you might find the ‘slow release’ formulation gentler on the tum?
