Hi,

Before bed my bloods are sometimes kind of low, maybe 4.3 - 5.0. Is there any sort of food I could eat before bed that will help me go the night without a hypo? I have started waking up during the night just to make sure I am not going into a hypo.

Thanks guys.

I'd eat a couple of savoury biscuits and cheese, or a yogurt - the fat means the carbs will be slower to take effect so hopefully that should keep your blood sugar steady all night rather than making it spike in the early part of the night and then drop in the later part. You'd need to experiment to work out how many grams of carbs to aim for, but I'd go for about 10g to start with and see how you get on. I'd aim to go to bed with your blood sugar around 7-8 rather than 4-5, if you can.

Btw, if you do wake up hypo in the night, you probably need to talk to your diabetes specialist nurse about dropping your basal insulin. The doses they give you at first are a "best guess" so they do often need tweaking, especially in the first few weeks.

A small packet of crisps can also be good, same combination of fat and carbs to slow the absorbtion. Or a glass of milk and biscuit

not to everyone's taste but a digestive and some butter/cheese is quite a good one and tasty too xx
