Well the 7th arrived and off I went to see nurse and doctor in 1, Ive been put on humalin once daily 10 units to start with 20 minutes before my evening meal which is where she saw the most common occurance of my spikes from the food diary I gave her, Im to go on using it for 3 weeks and if theres any issues im to call, made a follow up appointment for 2 weeks time though.Other main thing we discussed was carbs she wants me to start using brown rice and drastically cut out my use of potato one way or another.Came away after a lovely 40 minute chat feeling I had been cared about etc.Now I have to say she told me this insulin needs about 20 shakes first time I use it cause it will be cloudy and gosh it is so that will keep my arm strength lol.
Now to go and read the tonnes of information she has given me and I need to fill out A insulin ID card to.
No doubt Ill have some questions as I start on my new journey

It sounds like you had a good appointment Steff, good to hear 🙂 Sounds like a mixed insulin if you need to shake it! 🙂 Most important thing is to make sure you always have some form of fast-acting sugar to hand should you feel woozy, although hopefully they will have started you off on cautious doses to bring your levels under control gently 🙂

Hope it goes well, let us know if we can help at all! 🙂

Thanks Alan i really did feel it was the best appointment I have had so far, its hard enough to see 1 doc at my surgery but to have both her and the nurse there to discuss stuff with me was nice. Yeah they said either have jelly beans/babies to hand or dextrose tablets incase of any sudden symptoms. Im to take 10 units starting this evening x

Hi Steff, pleased you have insulin as hopefully this will bring your numbers down and you will feel so much better.
Regarding the shaking of the insulin................ please do not do this all that is needed is to roll the pen/vial whatever you are using gently back and fore a few times. You have isophane background mixed in with a short acting insulin. The isophane is the cloudy one 🙂

I'm curious to know why the nurse thinks brown rice is less carby or better for you than spuds as well. A reduction in both would be better for you.

Pleased you got this sorted , I had humalin when I first started on insulin and you will find that you need to shake it every time that you use it. When you shake it do it exactly as they say on the instruction leaflet and don't shake it to violently or it could get air in it.

Sounds like a good positive appointment Steff. Good luck with the shaking!

According to Carbs and cals. 155g of plain cooked brown rice is 50g carbs and 196g boiled little potatoes (6) is 30g carbs. So it looks like potatoes are the better value.

Many thanks Sue thinking back she did say shake or roll, but Ill take your advice and roll it. Well regarding the carbs she said there no diffirence in brown and white pasta but they is in brown and white rice . She also said look up Micheal Mosley so i will be doing that now

Hi Lilian,
I got myself a pack of small new potatoes to go with tea tonight so can use a handful and see what happens to my BS

New potatoes are always better, mash is best avoided. Have you tried sweet potato?

Hi Steff. 🙂

I've been converted to sweet potato and mashed is my preferred option. Or, just plain steamed in small chunks (which can be easily mashed on the plate anyway!).

Have to say that I wondered about the reference to brown rice being better than potato! Personally, I think I'd prefer to stick with small new potatoes, but it does all boil down to quantities and how you react at the end of the day.

Andy

I have one sweet potatoe, and chop it into usually 4 pieces lengthways, then spray lightly with spray oil, and bake on baking tray.

Andy thank you looks like I got a nice little shopping list going on here. Grovesy that sounds very nice actually

Sounds great and getting some where, just hope my appointment with the team in April goes as well as yours has done.
