At risk of diabetes
Hey everyone,

So I received a message saying my hba1c is 41. So borderline prediabetic. Not sure if it’s stress induced. I’m relatively fit and eat healthily. I’m noticing I get really dizzy after anything sweet. Is this normal.

I’ve not had anything since breakfast and my sugar level is 7.6. I’m so confused.

Hi @Jess39. First off, no need to panic, an HbA1c of 41 is at a level where the risks of any long term effects are trivial. Nevertheless you do not want it to go much higher so it would make sense to read around the forum and perhaps check out the learning zone (red tab above) to get yourself better informed about T2 diabetes and the ways of dealing with it if future tests shows your HbA1c to be going up. Above all ask any questions you might have, there will always be someone around who can help.

Welcome to the forum @Jess39

’Prediabetes’ can be a worrying thing to hear, but try not to panic. It isn’t actually a formal diagnosis as such, but just a shorthand way of saying that your risk of developing type 2 diabetes has increased.

This is usually mentioned when your HbA1c sits between 42 and 47 mmol/mol, so things have been caught early - in a way it suggests you are “at risk of becoming at risk of developing T2D” 😉

Of course that doesn’t mean you should not take this news seriously - it’s a very useful early notification that your metabolism is just beginning to struggle a little with the total carbohydrate content of your menu.

Cutting back on sweet and sugary things (including things like fruit juice) will help, alongside considering reductions in portions of starchy carbs (depending on how highly they figure in your diet overall).

It doesn’t mean you have to avoid these things entirely, but a slight moderation of potion size may help your metabolism to process your meals more effectively.
