ACUTE medical beds at the Royal Surrey County Hospital will be axed in April.
Half of the Hindhead ward, which predominantly treat diabetes and endocrinology patients, will be shut down and other services will be transferred to another location in the hospital.
Staff at the 17-bed unit were told only days ago that the beds will be axed.
Ward sisters informed nurses that a meeting will be held this week to discuss the closure of the unit and their future at the hospital.
A hospital spokesman said the unit closure is part of "planned streamlining" of its acute medical beds, following a reduction in patient admissions.
