Hi all, I am off to a bbq this evening, will be grazing on grilled meats and salads, and was wondering how to work out how much insulin to inject before eating as I will not be getting my carbs all in one hit, but staggered out across the evening.
would it be best to do a rough estimate on what I think I will eat and work it out from there??

Depending on what you see when you get there and what your levels are like and what you plan to drink, I would maybe just have 1 or 2 units up front and then correct later. The hot weather today will likely have an impact, so many of us need to be careful with our evening bolus and particularly when grazing food over a period of time rather than tucking into a proper meal in one go and it sounds like you intend to keep it mostly lowish carb anyway.

Hope you have a great time!

Thanks for your good advice, yes I will be going mainly low carb, no breads.
Will be drinking red wine in between glasses of water.
It's easier when I do a bbq as I know exactly what I will be cooking so can work out the carbs.

Since you are intending to avoid high carb foods, and you will be drinking red wine I might be inclined not to inject anything at all in advance and maybe inject your bolus an hour or two after starting to eat and err on the side of caution. I find protein starts to kick in about 2 hours after eating and will slowly release over the next 5-6 hours and I assume you will be eating a reasonable amount of protein so the 2 hour mark might be the best time to assess how it is going and add a modest bolus. As you know, it is always best to err on the side of caution, especially when alcohol is involved and going high for one night is not going to cause you a major problem if you slightly under dose, rather than risk a hypo..

Hope it went well @Martin62

What approach did you try in the end, and how did it work out?

And more importantly, how was the barbie?! 😛

Hi All, I tested before starting the bbq and was 8.2, injected 2 units of novorapid and set about enjoying the barbie and a few drinks, I waited a couple of hours after finishing eating and tested again, it was 5.5.
Had a few carbs to boost it up a bit before bedtime and had a pre-breakfast reading of 5.7 today.

Sounds like a RESULT, I hope you enjoyed it even in the heat.

Wow! That is an absolutely fantastic result all round. Well done that man!

Well done @Martin62. Can I ask what your I:c ratio is? Mine is 1:10 so that 2 units would be 20g of carbs. When you waited for the 2 hours after eating was that your bedtime test and if it was and your level was higher would you have corrected? Well done anyway on your levels.

Hi Gill, my ratio is 1:15 , the test after eating was not my bedtime one, I don't usually correct a high reading, although I don't get them very often, as they normally level out after a bit.
