The instructions for the Bayer Microlet 2 fingerpricker say that to unload it without risking a needle-stick injury, one should hold down the release button whilst pulling back the priming lever. However, doing this has caused my last one to wear out in only about six months. 😱🙄
To my mind it's a much more sensible idea to grip the used lancet with something (I use a pair of scissors, but pliers would probably work just as well) and pull it out manually without engaging the mechanism. This has the further advantage that one can then far more precisely drop the lancet into the sharps bin.
