Gunna start from breakfast so do i miss breakfast take my basal injection not eat then test at lunch time see if level got higher or lower to adjust the next day or if stable I leave the dosage and the basal correct ?

Hi Oliver. You definitely need to miss breakfast for a morning basal test. As I'm on the pump I test every hour of a basal test but not sure hoe often you should test on MDI but lunchtime sounds good to me. I hope that it goes well for you. Let us know the results so that others can advise you.

Brilliant so when I wake up say 8 am ish take blood an take basal injection at breakfast but not eat an then test say 12pm and see if blood stayed the same or dropped or raised then decide to adjust up or down depending if it raised or lowered or leave if stable , if not repeat next day but miss lunch

Hi Oliver that is what I would do BUT it is best if you can repeat the basal test before changing your insulin. It's also important that you don't eat anything during the basal test - if you have a hypo then you will need to eat and delay the basal test to another day. If your BG is high on waking eg more than 11 correct but again you will need to repeat the test another day. You must not bolus four hours before the basal test or during the basal test.

If you wake up high you can't do the morning basal test but that would suggest checking your night time basal. Eat no later than 8pm and then, provided that you don't bolus after 8pm check your BG at midnight, 3am and upon waking to identify what the changes are after midnight. You will need an alarm clock🙂 but it will tell you if your basal is correct (or not) for during the night.

That what I'm saying lol I only do 1 night time basal test but , I need get basal right before start carb counting , so this maybe tricky . So if do my basal insulin tonight and wake up below 11 I can miss my breakfast and take basal injection tomorrow

Hi Oliver in my opinion, but it is not medical advice because I'm not a professional if you wake up below 11 tomorrow, are not hypo and normally do a basal injection in the morning then you can do your basal test. But if you are unsure it is really important that you contact your diabetic specialist nurse for advice

You must not take an extra basal injection in the morning if you only usually do your basal in the evening/at night. If you plan to do any changes like that you must check with your Diabetes Specialist Nurse

Oh okay I get it now sorry 🙂 so as I do my basal at night means no carbs after 8pm tomorrow and do injection at 10ish and test at like 3 am right

Do you normally take 2 basal doses a day Oliver?

For a basal test you should take your basal insulin exactly as 'normal' and test (ideally every couple of hours) to see what is happening when you only have basal insulin active - ie no meal doses

This is a good overview (about half way down the page): http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/info/?page_id=120

Hi Oliver that's it. Do your basal at your normal time. Check your BG at midnight, at 3am and upon waking. If all of the results are similar then your basal is ok. Aim to repeat the basal tests at least twice before making any changes. Then phone your DIabetic Specialist Nurse for advice about how to change your insulin based upon the results.

Hi Mike our postings overlapped🙂

I'm trying this today as well... I take one basal at 8am, so taken it this morning (unfortunately my sugars were 10.2 at waking!!) and were 9.9 about an hour ago, so they're decreasing at the moment... we'll see what happens at lunchtime! But I think my nighttime levels are the ones that yoyo the most :( as can go to bed at 15 and wake at 7

xx

Hi Oliver and Vix how did you get on with your basal tests?

Guna start tomorrow as starting again on my my carb counting will let you all know my sugars through out the day 🙂
