Over the clack and whir of an electric clipper, Rashod Bradford remembered the visit that would force him to make changes in his lifestyle.

He was in a doctor's office for what he thought was a regular checkup, he said for his barber and the three customers waiting their turn at Brox Barbershop to hear. He complained he was sweating a lot. A test confirmed his blood pressure was high. More tests showed the long-untreated hypertension had damaged his kidneys.

That was about five years ago. Bradford was 25.

"Now I have to take medicine and try to cope," Bradford said.

The black-owned barbershop in the 900 block of Lake Boulevard opens Saturday for more than haircuts. Men coming through its doors also will be able to get screened for diabetes and high blood pressure. There is no cost for the testing, part of a statewide initiative targeting African-American men's health.

Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program is working with 100 barbershops from Redding to San Diego. Its goal is to screen 1,000 men.
