Diabetic Sue Clarke has become only the second South Australian to adopt an assistance dog to alert her when her blood sugar level drops dangerous low.
The mother-of-three from Berri, in the Riverland, received a golden retriever-poodle-cross from volunteer organisation Paws for Diabetics last week.
Already 11-week old Banjo has alerted Sue to multiple hypoglycaemic attacks - when her blood sugar levels drop - by recognising the scent of the episodes and licking Sue's hands to get her attention.
She said meeting Banjo felt like the start of a new beginning.
