Well today started very early, 3am, by a bg of 2.7. I felt aweful, shaking, sweating, dizzy etc. Had some glucose sweets 4@4 carbs each and waited 15 mins. Test again 2.2 I felt really bad, Hubby went downstairs and got me a small bottle of lucozade. I had a good swig and waited15 mins. Test again 5.8, much better. Had a small sandwich and went back to sleep. Woke again at 4am with a really bad headache. Test blood, 24.0. wth?. Gave a correction of insulin. Woke at 5am and was back down to 10.8. Not good but much better. I have managed to keep on track all rest of today. Can't think why this happened. That's thhe trouble with d it trips you up when you are not paying attention to it. Anyone else had a bad bg day?

Sorry to hear you have had such a rough time :( The 24 sounds like it was probably a rebound high, with your liver kicking in with extra glucose and supplementing the carbs you had already taken to treat the hypo. I would imagine the headache was due to the huge swings. I hope that you don't experience anything like that for a long time to come and get to enjoy the remainder of the holidays!

I've had a couple of mild hypos today, but know exactly why I had them - trying to take into account some extra 'treats' by bolusing a little extra insulin at mealtimes then getting caught out when it kicked in too soon! 🙄 Apart from that my levels have been surprisingly good, only slightly above 7 a couple of times. 🙂

Thanks Northerner. It's just the way this d goes sometimes I guess. Just when you think you've got it sorted, it gives you a nudge to let you know it is still about. I'm glad you have had a good day and your bg's have behaved themselves.

Spiritfree - I wholly concur with Northie as to the 'why' but can I ask a question? That Q is - how much (on your meter) does 10g of fast-acting carb increase your BG by?

The reason why I ask is your comment re 'a couple of mouthfuls of Lucozade'. Cos I used to think that = 10g carb. It doesn't! You need 60ml of Lucozade to be 10g of carb.

That raises me by 3.0 on my meter. But at 3am with that low a BG I'd go for overkill anyway and have nearer 100ml (17g of carb) which would fairly instantly shoot me up into an area where I'd hope I was safe from a liver-dump. (would increase me by 5.0 on my meter) The trouble with undertreatment - if it's only just dropped - is that you continue to stay too low which then makes Mr Liver stick his oar in. Of course if you've already been too low for some while, when you eventually come to and test you'll still get the dump - and the rotten headache - next morning - but sometimes it works, even if you are in double figs when you wake.

If you only do enough to teeter in the low 4's for the rest of the night then jolly old D will bite you in the bum ........
