I've not poked my nose on the forum for a week or so, newly diagnosed and got some good advice here thanks. I started to feel pretty ill a week or so ago with bad pains in my arms and legs, stomach felt Seasick and I was quite dizzy. I assumed it was the general getting used to the Metformin and tried to put up with it. Yesterday, however, it got to the point that I was scared to lie down and close my eyes in case I never woke up again😱. In the end I called the out of hours doctor for the area and the woman answered the call and asked me a lot of questions. After a few minutes she said she was calling an ambulance for me and to get ready to let them in! They arrived and I let them in. They seemed a bit miffed that I was walking and talking and told me they were getting fed up of the service calling them out, 3-30am, when it wasn't always necessary. They checked my stat's and all seemed within normal levels so I told them to Bu$?er off and I'd see my gp today. They seemed happy to do that so I went to bed and managed a little sleep. Still in a bad panic and a lot of pain but managed to get an appointment to see my Doctor. I wasn't fit to walk but I got there and he immediately told me to STOP the Metformin as He was sure I have Lactic Acidosis! Metformin can actually cause it in rare cases and I am one of those. It means that, as there is no "Cure" for it, other than the body's own defences over time, I am on No Diabetes medications until it's sorted and he says that could take as long as two weeks. Not looking forward to that. I am now going to have to take it a bit more seriously and try to control BG with diet for a while. I hope to get help and advice from people on here about how and what to do and I apologise in advance if I ask for repetition as the brain injuries do make me slow to remember things.
Sorry for the Long Winded Moan but I needed to get it off my chest as it were.

How awful! Really sorry to hear this Pedaldog :( Another of our members experienced this a while back and didn't know what was happening. Although it is rare, they really should stress the danger of it as a side-effect, as it is clearly not something that springs to mind. Metformin is normally very safe, but I think when you are ill (fighting an infection) then you are supposed to stop taking it.

I hope that you recover quickly and manage to get your levels under control without the meds. 🙂

Certainly if you are on insulin and ill you should stop taking it as you have a risk of developing both ketoacidosis and Lactic acidosis.
It is mentioned on the Patient Information leaflet as a possible side-effect but many people don't read them. In the post linked below there is an indication that in some circumstances hospitals will try treatment for lactic acidosis.

Hope you are feeling a lot better soon - and ask what you need to to get yourself back on track.

The GP I saw said to see him in a couple of weeks for future plans. I am seeing the Nurse in the Diabetic clinic on Tuesday next so I hope I have something positive to say and that she might be able to sus' out an alternative medication to try. It's over 27 hours since I took the last of the Metformin and, although I still feel lousy, it's a lot better than even this morning so things are progressing okay.

Glad you are feeling a bit better today and hope that the Nurse can come up with or get someone else to come up with another option for you.

Really sorry to hear this :( but glad you are feeling better after stopping the metformin, hopefully the nurse will be able to advise you.
