Just had an appointment with my GP as I was having issues around bowel function.
All tests have come back clear so he was looking for possible causes.

One suggestion is lactose intolerance, so I will try a lactose free diet for a while.

The other thing that was suggested was is Bacterial Overload in the Gut
which is apparently common with T1. Has anyone else heard of this?

I've heard of something called SIBO which is small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Don't know a lot about it but stumbled across it whilst trying to get to the bottom (excuse the pun) of my own gut issues.
I discovered I had issues with cows milk about 5 years ago and switched to goats and soya which solved my issues. I can tolerate some cows now but don't use it at home very much.

Thanks @Peely66
I shall look into that.

I’ve not heard of that @SB2015 but I have heard of SIBO which @Peely66 mentioned. I take pre and probiotics sometimes when I feel under par.

I think I remembered the name incorrectly, and you @rebrascora and Peely have hit the nail on the head.
It sounds like it would be worth me going down the lactose free trial to start with.
I haven’t liked soya or almond milk before but I have only tried it in tea. Perhaps black tea (which I drink very weak) will work, and I can try the others on my low carb cereal.
Thanks for the ideas about the pre and probiotics. I shall follow these up too.

I like the coconut milk in cartons (not the one in tins you use for curries). It’s much nicer IMO. It comes fresh or long life. The brand is Koko.

If you’re a coffee drinker the Oatly Barista is good.

Have a look at Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency and diabetes it's worth a read and might give you some pointers.

For lactose free dairy products there is a very good lactose free milk and it tastes just like milk as well.
When I shop for my mum I delve into the vegan dept as plenty of plant based products there as well.

Probiotics rather than prebiotics are the treatment of choice in SIBO, but as it’s best to change only one thing at a time try lactose free initially. If you take probiotics as well, and things improve, you won’t know which is working.

Oat milk is my preference for plant milks generally.

Sorry to hear you’ve been having trouble @SB2015 - hope either the lactose-free stuff, or the probiotics settle things down for you.

Thanks for the suggestions
I plan to try these things out after my hand op.

Iit took 4 years to be diagnosed with Endocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency or EPI . Easily treated with a supplement of Creon with every meal . your doctor should ask for a stool sample to check for elastase. Not common but not too rare either in type 1's

good luck

A simple blood test will also show if there's a pancreas problem. I asked my ex GP to check my amylase levels and this showed a major issue.
He just ignored it so basically I was left to die from malnutrition as not absorbing any nutrients.

Changed GP practice and new GP went into overdrive. Seen within 9 days at the major pancreatic centre scans organised, follow up and now more scans on Monday. I am now eating properly again and using Creon for the enzyme replacement.

Only downside is I've gained back all the weight I lost. 🙂
The Creon has given me back my life 🙂

Own EPI was diagnosed by stool sample, had to provide 2 to confirm matters.

Been taking Creon for last 4 years, does what it says on tin.
