Well got the results of my eye checks and now have background retinopathy, though it seems not badly as the next check is in a year.

Any advice on what to watch out for in the future?

If you are able to keep your blood sugar levels in range most of the time, it is possible to reverse background retinopathy.
I have managed this and been retinopathy free for a couple of years by lowering my levels and minimising the spikes.

I had background retinopathy at the first check, and it was gone by the second test. All down to eating low carb and keeping in normal ranges of blood glucose.

I had background retinopathy on my first eye screening shortly after diagnosis, got my HbA1c down to 5.0%, and it has never went away. But neither had it got worse nor had any effect on my eye sight.

Just keep your levels under control, so you do not cause it to worsen, and it is not something to worry about. It just means you attend a screening annually instead of biennially.

Sorry to hear about your background retinopathy @Stuvart

I can remember that being quite a shock when I had my first.

As others have said it can clear up with more stable and in-range BG levels for some people, and for others it just seems to stabilise and not progress for decades.

But aiming for as in-range BG levels as you can, and keeping a close eye on your blood pressure are supposed to help

Thanks all. I'm still trying to get my hba down at last test (6 weeks ago ish) it was 120 which is strange as my finger picks rarely get above 8.
