Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I haven't been on this site for a couple of years. I managed to reverse my diet controlled type two diabetes in 2017. I have been diet controlled since then and have managed it quite well. I had a "widowmaker" heart attack January 18th. I do remember some of it. I was resuscitated in the ambulance and then shocked six times. A stent was put in. I was put into a coma and on a ventilator to avoid brain damage. I also had fluid on the lungs. This resulted in severe damage my heart. I now have heart failure. My levels went very very high and they put me on metformin and Daplagliflozin (which helps with the heart too) I am having a scan in nine days time so hope to have more idea of what will happen in the future. When I first arrived home I was very weak and felt quite unwell. Since then I am doing well, I feel ok (taking lots of meds) and I am now going out walking for about 30 minutes a day. My ribs have virtually repaired now. This was all a dreadful shock for my family and myself, made more upsetting because we couldn't see each other. I am very grateful to still be here. My levels are quite good now. It's difficult to find meals low in fat, sugar, carbs and salt.
Thank you for reading this.

That sounds like one heck of an ordeal you've been through. Hopefully things from the scan will be ok enough to give you a path going forward.
Trying to think what's low in fat, sugar, carbs and salt..... guess you're going to have to move to a mediterranean type diet and watch the fats perhaps?
Are you going to be referred to a dietician from all of this?

Hi Colin. Yes it was very traumatic for me and my family. Yes it's a tricky one. Fortunately I love salads so that's lucky. I haven't been referred to a dietician. I thought I would come back on here and see if I can get some ideas. 🙂

What an dreadful experience for you. So pleased to read that you've come through it and are on the mend, and that your levels are quite good now, but sorry to hear that you've had to go onto medication for your diabetes after your years in remission. Hopefully you can sort out your diet.

Martin
Thank you 🙂

Salads with lean meats and fish I'm guessing?

A couple of suggestions would be edame bean pasta which is lower carb 15g carb /100g and is available in different types.
Also Quark (Lindahls Kvarg) from ASDA which is a bit like yoghurt at 5.1g carb but low fat 0.3g for 150 g pot, it goes well with berries, I have had white choc and raspberry.
You could use rubs for flavour with meat or fish, Spicetice do a nice range.
I hope you will feel better soon and gain your strength, just take it day by day, I'm sure you will have good days and bad but take heart, no pun intended, from the good.

What an awful experience for you @Janine I hope the scan gives you good information and that the damage is as limited as it can be.

There are low fat plant-based cookbooks that use vinegars and spices instead of fats. Perhaps they might give you some ideas?

Thank you I will look into this.

Goodness what a lot you have been through @Janine

Must have been very frightening for you all, and particularly difficult with covid restrictions keeping you away from loved ones.

Good news that you are feeling better and are able to exercise regularly.

Keep us posted with any updates you get after your scan.

Hi @Janine , that sounds horrific! Glad you've pulled through and are on the mend and able to exercise. With regards to diet if you're fit and able to cook from scratch lots of meals should be ok as you can control the fat and sugar content. Home made soups, stews, curries, salads, stir fries? Fish is quick and easy if you like it. Most recipes can be adapted to suit your needs and your family. You should be able to borrow cookery books on line from the library. Wishing you a speedy recovery, mentally and physically.

Hello @Janine 🙂 Glad you are feeling better after all that. You have been through the mill and then some. I hope you can get some ideas on the forum for tasty but healthy meals.
