Researchers in Italy may have found a link between type 1 diabetes and low levels of carnitine, a chemical produced naturally by the body and found in foods such as meat, fish and dairy, at birth.

The team looked at blood samples taken from 250 newborn babies from Umbria and Tuscany, and measured their carnitine levels.

They found that babies who later went on to develop type 1 diabetes had lower levels of carnitine than those who did not.

This will be great IF something could then be done to prevent type 1 developing. Otherwise, knowing your baby will one day develop type 1 but being helpless as to timing/prevention is NOT something any parent would want!

Well, there is talk of a vaccine being developed, so hopefully that plus this will mean fewer T1 children in the future 🙂

Let's hope so! No more type 1 🙂 🙂 🙂

I share this sentiment, having recently been asked that any siblings of Millie join some research programme which would determine via bloods if they were to be any greater risk (30%) of developing T1 at some point  I wasn't sure how any of us would benefit from this, more the opposite!
