For 5 days I've been really strict with my food and now that my glucometer's arrived I've been testing regularly (fasting in the A.M. then immediately before and 2 hours after each meal). I've decided to hold off the metformin for now and see how I get on with diet changes.

Every single reading has been in the normal (not even pre-diabetic) range except for fasting first thing in the morning, when it is between 7-9 (last few mornings: 8.8, 7, 8.4).

Can anyone offer any tips? I'm not snacking before bed. Dinner usually involves at least some 'complex' carbs (e.g. lentils or wholegrain basmati rice).

Thanks!

Sounds like you might be experiencing Dawn Phenomenon, plus a little extra insulin resistance in the mornings?

These are not uncommon and are quite tricky to tackle if not on medication. Some people find that a small low carb snack before bed helps the body to feel sustained overnight so it doesn't start dumping glucose in the early hours.

Thanks Mike. I wasn't aware of the dawn phenomenon but just read a little about it here coincidentally. I'll keep working at it!
