Diabetes is the condition created by the body's inability to naturally control blood sugar levels. Once someone is diagnosed with diabetes based on abnormal blood sugar levels, the next challenge for the doctor is to determine the root cause, since that knowledge leads to the best approach to self-care and medication strategies.
If diabetes is diagnosed in childhood, some doctors immediately assume Type 1 diabetes. It was formerly called "juvenile diabetes." But experience and research proved that age alone is unreliable for determining causation or type. While Type 1 diabetes generally strikes teens and children, it is not limited to younger ages. Adults get it too.
