Hi audrey, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis - have you been given any medication for your diabetes? High blood sugars will make you sleepy, but now you have been diagnosed hopefully they will begin to improve and you will have more energy.

The good thing (if there is such a thing!) about diabetes is that if you can learn how to control it then the chances of any of the problems associated with it will diminish considerably. I'm sure you have lots of questions, so please feel free to ask them, whatever they are, and we will try to help 🙂

Have a look in our Useful links thread for links to some good information. I would particularly recommend reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and getting Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - an excellent introduction to what to expect.

I look forward to hearing more from you - don't be afraid to join in wherever you wish and keep the questions coming 🙂

Thank you Northerner, join forum as i dont understand diabetes as i only met 1 person who had it so i was hoping i could get more of an incite to it as my doctor just said take these and change your diet so kinda struggling as to what i suppose to change it to as everything i seem to have sends my levels through the roof. I am on 2x Gliclazide daily at the moment was on metformin until a week ago but changed em as my sugar levels has not dropped below 15 at the moment.

Hi Audrey, not very helpful of your GP :( I'd suggest getting The GL Diet for Dummies - GL (Glycaemic Load) is a good approach to eating healthily and combining foods that will be gentle on your blood sugar levels. I would also suggest starting a food diary, noting down everything you eat each day, including carbohydrate and fat content. By doing this you will be able to identify areas that might benefit from changing either portion sizes or substituting other, more 'diabetes-friendly' alternatives. If you are not sure then please just ask us and we will try to help out! 🙂

Welcome Audrey

It does take a while to see improvements, but it's good that your GP has stopped metformin as that wasn't working for you. Glicazide might be the answer, althouhg you might have to try other tablets or combinations of medications.

In the meantime, what you can do is increase your activity levels, reduce our weight (if overweight at present) and modify carbohydrate in particular in you diet (eg consider GI and GL as other have mentioned) - hopefully you already feel you have a bit more energy and are spending less than 3/4 of day on sofa? You won't be back to your old self instantly, but if you can realise small improvements, you'll know you're heading in the right direction 🙂

Hi Audrey, welcome aboard, hope your feeling a bit better now. Its all a huge worry and puzzle at first, but take it one step at a time and before long you will get it all under control.

I reduced carbs, mainly bread and potatoes, and of course pasta, and that helped me to get my readings down, and my weight too which was an extra bonus.🙂

Welcome the the forum Audrey. 🙂
