When Amy Ryan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 29, she was "shocked, confused, lonely, sad, angry." Now, in her new book, Shot: Staying Alive With Diabetes, Ryan, 46, an attorney who lives in Alexandria, Va., shares how she has learned to live with the disease. She is married and has a daughter and two stepsons.
Almost 26 million children and adults (8.3% of the U.S. population) in the USA have diabetes. There are two major forms: type 1 and type 2. In adults, type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases.
