Hi there this is my first time here and i havent really been looking after myself so had a shock talking to from GP this morning so need to make changes i am type 2 on metformin could anyone please tell me the best things to eat and cut out a lot of people have told me atkins diet is good for diabetics but i thought that was full of fats im so confused can anyone please help xx

I don't follow any diets but I think atkins is healthy fats and the likes, as for things to cut out or limit it would be carbohydrate things like the obvious sweet stuff, potatoes, rice, past, bread etc oh and welcome to the forum 🙂 x

Welcome.
You have to find what works for you and what you can maintain long term.

The approach I take is to cut or reduce starch sources such as bread, pasta, rice, cereals & starchy vegetables (such as potatoes), instead replacing them with green leafy vegetables.

As for fat, don't fear the fats, just use quality extra virgin oils or fat from animal sources (e.g. grass fed butter).... Avoid vegetable, canola, sunflower & any other oil that needs to be chemically extracted.

After this try & find the effect various foods have on your BG by testing. If the result is not good then gut it from your diet.

thankyou its just getting my head around it all xx

Hello and welcome to the forum. 🙂 I try to do Atkins and for me it's the healthiest option, I feel tiptop on it. It does have a bad reputation though. If you read Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution you will see that it's really a book about diabetes, how to prevent it, how to manage it once you've got it. In my opinion everything we now read as 'new' in diets is basically Atkins. They just change it around a little bit to sell their 'new' books and diets. They tell me nothing new basically. All the info has been there via Dr A since 1972. Give it a whirl, see how you do on it. The proof is in the pudding...but don't eat the pudding. :D

I personally follow a more balanced diet approach as I know that I will be able to stick to it in the long run. I have drastically reduced the amount of carbs in my diet but I still have them. I still eat rice and pasta, but have changed my bread to burgen and very rarely eat potatoes now.

You have to find what works for you. I do not eat pasta or bread, but do eat small amounts of rice, roast potato, couscous and buckwheat. Although I can only tolerate plain boiled rice, and mash potato is out of the question for me.

As others have said you have to find your balance of what will work for you.

I low carb that doesn't mean no carbs.
I don't eat rice, pasta, bread, potatoes the usual sweets, cakes, pastries unless its treat day which isn't very often
I can have as little as 20g or as much as 100g depending on what I decide to eat.
Nowhere near as much as I used to. Which was over 250g of carbs daily.
I feel bloated when I have carbs. I discovered this when having my treat of roast tatties and mash so next time I'll reduce it as I know they'll be a next time.
Good luck and let us know how you get on with it
