Hi guys,

I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetic end of may, hba1c of 61, at the last check in July it was 49, lost 1st 7lb since then, latest blood pressure reading is 123/85 really trying hard to minimise it as such but having massive anxieties where it's affecting my sleep and feel like I'm panicking as I've now been referred to a nephrologist (kidney specialist) as I'm producing too much protein. I'm petrified something bad is going to be diagnosed. Has anyone got any advice for me or been in this situation

Welcome to the forum Lisa. No personal experience of a situation similar to you, but early referral to a kidney specialist may mean appropriare medication to treat.

Thank you copepod, I'm naturally a worrier, my gp has explained it to me that he wants me to be reviewed by a specialist for a second opinion. Just feel massively stressed about it x

I was diagnosed with type 2 in Feb ‘15 and I’ve had proteinuria (protein leak from my kidneys) for as long as I can remember. I suspect it started as the result of high b/p in my case and I had it 32yrs ago when pregnant with my son and had pre-eclampsia. However, my eGFR (glomerular filtration rate) which shows how your kidneys are working is at normal levels. Your GP will have sent you as a precaution and they’ll look at your creatinine output and eGFR.
Usually Ace Inhibitor meds are prescribed to protect the kidneys.

You’re doing the important things in losing weight, getting your glucose levels in range and keeping your b/p steady. No reason to get massively stressed and it will push up your blood pressure which isn’t good for the kidneys. Keep on doing what you’re doing and those measures will help enormously. Best wishes.

Thank you so much amigo this has totally reassured me now, honestly feel like a weight has lifted. My egfr bloods are all within normal range along with lft, fbc, wcc etc. Just this dam protein in my urine.

I'm on metformin 500mg twice a day, amlodopine 10mg and candersartan 2mg. Xx

You’re already on a calcium channel blocker in Amlodipine and an Angiotensin II receptor antagonist with Candersartan. Sounds as if this could be the result of longer term b/p problems Lisa but it’s good that you’re already on meds which will help and protect your kidneys. Make it your priority to get and keep your b/p down. Good to hear your eGFR etc. are at normal levels.

Good luck with the nephrologist and it’s always as well to have a second specialist opinion on these issues. My GP simply wrote to the nephrologist for advice on me but he keeps an eye on my kidney function.

You’re doing well 🙂

Candesartan is not an ACE inhibitor -

'The name of your medicine is Candesartan Tablets. The active ingredient is candesartan cilexetil. This belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor antagonists.'

They do much the same as ACE inhibitors but are not considered to be such good 'kidney protectors' - hence the '~pril' tablets are usually first choice for us PWD.

Yes I stand corrected Jenny...I’ve edited it accordingly. I’m on Lisinopril which is an Ace Inhibitor to protect my kidneys.

I'm glad to hear you're on an 'ace' inhibitor, Amigo, and not a rubbish one (groan).🙄

Hi Lisa.🙂 Congratulations on the weight loss and lower A1c - it sounds like you've been working really hard at being healthy.😛
