The NHS has an annual budget of around £110 billion. And we need every penny that taxpayers spend to work as efficiently as possible – not least because money wasted is money that could have helped a patient.

Last year, I outlined a radical new blueprint for curbing waste. We are already making good progress, with around £250 million saved in a year. And now, for the first time, landmark changes in the NHS’s standard contract will make it compulsory for hospitals to publish details of where their money goes.

With an eye-watering £14 billion spent on hospital goods and services every year, better procurement represents a tremendous opportunity to improve efficiency and free up money for patient care. Things such as gloves, disinfectant wipes and A4 paper are bought in vast quantities. Every hospital – and every manager – has a responsibility to get the best price possible and to account for their spending.

Should be a no-brainer and never allowed to happen in the first place 🙄
