If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, you can live a long and productive life with few complications. Irene Cook is proof of that.
Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabates when she was 11 years old, Ms Cook’s mother was told her daughter may live to 50 if she was lucky. And there was no chance she would be a mother.
That diagnosis was made 77 years ago. Today, at age 88, Ms Cook is a resident of Peterborough Manor where she is frequently referred to as Sunshine by other residents, a reference to the constant smile on her face.
Ms Cook has reason to smile — her diabetes is as well under control as it was decades ago. She and her late husband Bruce had two daughters and she has lived a very active social life.
