Hey there
Can someone please clear up the question as to whether sweeteners in tea and coffee are ok for diabetics? I have just been diagnosed with Type 2 and keep hearing conflicting information and it’s driving me mad❤️

Some people find sweeteners fine and some don't, a better option is to wean yourself off having your drinks sweetened, you will soon get used to it.

Welcome @Adamski 🙂 Sweeteners should be fine for your blood sugar, but it’s the other possible effects you need to make a judgement on. One study suggested they affected the gut biome, for example.

So, I agree with @Leadinglights Best to gradually cut down on them and only have them as an occasional treat. Just my opinion 🙂 I avoid them as much as possible but will occasionally have a Diet Coke when out a handful of times or less each year.

This might give you the information you're after:-

I am happy to have sweeteners as part of my diet - but I don’t have much - maybe a glass or two of sugar free squash or a diet drink a day.

I don’t find the flavour objectionable (eg aftertaste), and I don’t think they present any problems for me with the amount I have.

Welcome to the forum @Adamski (that’s a ’Killer’ username by the way) 😉

The population of bacteria in your digestive system. A healthy population of bacteria is good for your health. Studies have suggested artificial sweeteners might damage this colony and have an effect on the body. One suggestion was they (sweeteners) increased the risk of Type 2 diabetes:

I am afraid i agree with Leadinglights and once you manage without its hard to have it with. i have not found the same with no milk i still have to have a bit of milk in tea so limit that as much as possible.
i have cream in coffee but not in tea.
i find sweeteners in things dreadful. i tried Kvarg with stewed rhubarb nice to eat but the after taste in my mouth i have still to get rid off.
I think if you take 5 spoons id cut it down first and aim for lower . However sometimes stopping altogether is quicker.
im not sure i can eat rhubarb cooked without sugar but its off the menu for now.

Don't & have never used sweetners in hot drinks, but they are used in dilute squash that I drink & have no concerns about them whatsoever.

Don't & have never used sweetners in hot drinks,

I gave up the sugar that I’d always had in tea and coffee at diagnosis when I asked the WRVS woman who was coming around the diabetes ward if I could have a sugar in my coffee, and she said with huge empathy and gentleness, “No, dear”

I gave up sugar in tea because my partner doesn't take it and when he made me a cuppa it never had sugar in it and I drank it to be polite and gradually got used to it. He and I both took 2 sugars in our coffees but that was the first thing I cut out at diagnosis. In fact I cut the coffee because I always said that I would rather not drink it as drink it without sugar. Now I have my coffee with real double cream and I enjoy it more than I ever did with sugar and it is my daily luxury.
