Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, I've had type 1 diabetes for over 30 years. At the age of 65 I have started to suffer from arthritis in my fingers. My GP has prescribed Voltarol Emulgel to ease the discomfort which has had little effect on the pain. Can anyone suggest a treatment that is safe for diabetics?

Hello @tavonyms ,

Welcome to the forum. We can’t really offer medical advice in terms of other alternatives for treatments, but have you shared your concerns with your GP regarding Voltarol? They may have some alternatives if you feel like it isn’t working.

I have spoken to my GP, unfortunately he hasn't offered any alternatives. I was hoping someone may have a natural alternative treatment they could suggest.
Please can you tell me why my post has been moved to this platform.

Welcome to the forum!
Have you gone down the 'supplement' route, rather than the 'medication'? A lot of people swear by Seatone, which comes under the heading of a food supplement. (Not suitable for shellfish allergy or gout sufferers, though). This isn’t a recommendation, as I have no personal experience, I had a relative who took it and swore by it, but others take fish oil supplements and such like, that are supposed to be good for joints. I don’t think anything that’s classed as a food will have a ‘not suitable for diabetics' label on, I know a lot of things classed as 'medicines' put that on the label, just to cover themselves.

Sorry to hear about the arthritis in your fingers @tavonyms :(

I have to say I’ve never found those NSAID gels to have any effect either - I’d rather just take ibuprofen tablets. It doesn’t help that there doesn’t seem to be a proper ‘dose’ maximum/minimum on the gel boxes either - which makes me wonder how much active ingredient they actually contain?

Welcome to the forum!

They actually come in differnt strength gels. I can use the gels but if took the tablets they would aggravate my allergic rhinitis!

Had issues with thumb joint 2 years back, diagnosis was carpel tunnel, specialist physio carried out steroid injection into joint & all was well, its started to come back so will likely have to go back for another.

Worth asking your gp to refer you over to physio dept.

Just a quick update on the arthritis pain. I've been taking 500MG of pure cod liver oil daily since I started this thread and I have to say that after a month of taking it the joints in my fingers do feel a lot more flexible and the general discomfort has decreased substantially.
If you are suffering the same issues as me it may be worth giving cod liver oil a try.

Glad you have found it helpful @tavonyms

Thanks for the update 🙂
