Laveen Cesar Chavez High track coach Delawn Leggett comes to the track with a stopwatch and a syringe.

He never knows when he needs to pull the syringe out of his bag to administer an insulin shot for senior 800-meter runner Ashley Pinkney.

Pinkney has Type 1 juvenile diabetes.

?She doesn?t complain,? Leggett said. ?With that being said, it?s hard to know what she is going through. It takes more out of me talking to her, what to look for, the changes. I have to keep my eye on her.?

It?s part of the challenges high school coaches face these days working with athletes with diabetes.

Scottsdale Desert Mountain softball pitcher Andy Wellins was giving herself sometimes four shots a day before receiving an insulin pump last summer that keeps her blood sugar regulated when she enters the circle for the 20-5 Wolves.
