Most overweight patients in England face being denied surgery, even when this goes against national guidelines on clinical best practice.

The Reality Check team asked the 213 local clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), responsible for planning and buying healthcare services, in England whether they limited funding for surgery on the basis of body mass index (BMI).

We asked which procedures this applied to and what the BMI limit was.

:(

My bmi was 34 the last time it was checked, already been told my knee is non operable due to it being out of alignment and arthritis. With the current levels of pain in my other knee and hips I would guess the arthritis has spread to these joints, docs just say take the pain killers which I hate taking.

It's a bit of a pain in the backside :D as recently started getting out and about more and been on the dance floor with out being dragged shouting and screaming, but sure does hurt a lot.

This is the same approach we see with issues like limiting test strips for Type 2s, or Libre sensors and insulin pumps, and many other things - blanket bans that take no account of individual circumstances :(

The problem is that limiting these types of surgery just stores up even bigger problems for the future :( Scrap HS2 and there'd be more than enough money available to really turn all these problems around and help thousands, if not millions of people enjoy a much improved quality of life. Extending the London commuter belt out to Birmingham doesn't really benefit anyone :( Just my opinion of course!

More short sighted cash savings as per usual, I would love to loose weight and feel better, with the aches and pains, just need a little help to get things sorted out. Battle no doubt start again next year when I start making the annual review appointments which are over due, but with all this years battles lost and time frame all mixed up, will be sorting out reviews around the 12 month mark of switching GP's as so far with the new GP all they have concentrated on is my blood pressure and nothing on the diabetes front, maybe because I was under the hospital all be it they chucked me off their list a fair time ago.
