The idea of the eating is to demonstrate you can carb count and dose adjust! ie Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating! (DAFNE)

Which is fair enough but if they expect everyone to have attended one they need to accommodate people and be more flexible.

I’m not going to go on a course and do something I find uncomfortable.

It is the easiest way to see whether folk have a) grasped the intricacies of the theory of carb counting and then b) do the maths to calculate their dose of bolus insulin for that food and test it on themselves rather that just 'on paper'.

Again I understand that and not disputing but again from my point of view does not address or accommodate people that may feel uncomfortable doing that. If it is an aspect that adjustments can’t be offered in relation to then I won’t be doing the course if asked.

Well you'd just have to explain that you wouldn't be comfortable 'doing' that bit - presumably you ain't locked in a room and force fed!

Mark on my DAFNE course they were really lovely and accommodating. i couldn’t do everything the way others did because of my gastroparesis. I’m sure that if you tell them what you don’t want to there could be alternative options. I certainly hope So.

That made me laugh - haha - I’d hope not either.

Yes I’d hope they would be accommodating. It hasn’t been something that’s even been brought up from the team to be honest since I started with them in 2018. Obviously the DSN mentioned it as it was her that said she didn’t like the course but I’ve worked with other DSNs and dieticians and they haven’t mentioned it either. I thought to get Libre on prescription they would of made it mandatory but again got that with no mention of a course. Maybe I’ll raise the subject next time I am seen about the course and what my options are.

@MarkGeordie, the course I did did not require any eating. We had to calculate carbs based on the nutritional information on the side of the packet.
Apparently, the course did include a meal out in times gone by but it wasn’t popular so they scrapped it and shortened the course.

However, if you are interested in learning the details without the uncomfortable interaction, you could take a look at the Bertie Online course. I understand this is an online version of DAFNE from the Bournemouth CCG. It is open to anyone ... even Geordies
( My partner is from Newcastle so hopefully I can say that!)

I will check that out thank you.
