I went to see the Optician a couple of weeks for my annual eye check. I am at present at risk of diabetes. I have been going to see him every year for a number of years now.

I was chatting to the Optometrist about diabetic retinopathy and he said that 10/20 years ago he was diagnosing people with it on a regular basis because they had been diabetic for some time and did not know. He said nowadays he very rarely sees it as doctors are much more alert for it now and more testing is done.

I thought that was a wonderful thing to hear. I hope his experience is true in all areas of the UK.

There is screening programme but different areas administer differently around the country. I am having mine on the 28th the screen service use a room in a LLOyds Pharmacy in a nearby town. The pictures are then sent electronically to be viewed by an expert.

I think it's better testing technology means it's more likely to be picked up earlier. I've been having eye tests since I was 4 and it's only in recent years I've had pictures taken.

I admit right now to not going to the opticians for 6 years and having the same glasses all that time and the optometrist really told me off and said there's no excuse you don't even need to pay. Rightly deserved and I did take it in and will be going yearly now. But nowadays you would hope with how much technology had come on they can pick anomolies up quicker.
