I certainly think DUK could be doing more to educate and inform the population about the causes of the different types of diabetes.
@Hannah DUK ?
Yes, we are very much aware of the misconceptions between diabetes types and prejudices around 'lifestyle' choices, which frustratingly does not always apply to type 2, let alone type 1 or other types, plus, sadly other factors which may lead to some lifestyle choices are not always recognized. We are very clear in distinguishing the differences between types when speaking with the media and even have a journalist guide which we send out, that outlines the differences and facts for the media to be aware of. We also raise concerns about incorrect media reports or portrayal with Editors and have requested apologies in the past. But essentially, as charity, we do not have outright control and our opinion is not always heard.
Its disappointing to hear that some HCP are ill-informed, but its absolutely in our interest to make sure that healthcare professionals are engaged and up to date with the latest medical advances - or even just the basics to start!

There
are lots of ways that this happens; bi-monthly journals, conferences, involvement networks,
clinical champions,
shared resources to name a few. I think with advances in technology it means that it is even easier for information to be shared quickly and I hope that more and more of the healthcare world will be able to keep updated.
But there is always room to do more and we can always do better. I pass on any feedback that you throw my way to the rest of Diabetes UK and its is reviewed weekly. So - thanks
@Matt Cycle for highlighting the importance of continuing to raise awareness & understanding of diabetes types, and correcting myths and prejudices. And thank you
@pottersusan - as you have mentioned that there is a need to increase awareness beyond Types 1 & 2.
