I don't want to scare everyone here so have been a bit slow posting this, but I decided I should let you know. I went to my pharmacy last week and was told that there were problems getting hold of the prefilled apidra pens. The pharmacy gave me a copy of the letter they had got from the manufacturers which says that they expect to have it back in supply by the end of December 😱 Basically this means that I am going to have to switch to something else in the mean time. The pharmacy said that they can still get hold of vials for pumps and syringes, and I think the letter says they can get cartridges too, so hopefully something can be sorted out!

oops! wrong section - can someone move this!

Can you get hold of a pen via your GP/clinic so that you can use penfills Natalie ?

Rob

I'll leave this hear for a while to make sure everyone sees it. Thank you for sharing and passing on information

I hope so Rob, was trying to get a pump so maybe that would be an option, although I do seem to be sorting things out now, so maybe I don't need one.

You can get hold of vials no problem at all. So just ask for some syringes and use a vial. 🙂

I certainly wouldn't accept a change of insulin just because of it. Insist on either pen or syringe as Sue says.

Apidra Removal

Has anyone heard about them stopping making Apidra? Because my parents went to get a prescription of it and they said they had been told they were stopping making the Solostar pens and they also questioned if I was ill enough to be on it as it is only meant to be given to those under 18 or over 70?????

Marc

I've read in a few places that there is an interruption in the supply of pens (until end of December I think). Anyone wanting to continue to use Apidra might need to switch to vial/syringe for a short while until the pen-supply resumes.

I'm not sure what the situation is with cartridges (ClikStar and Autopen24), but I think you can still get them OK

Also the pharmacist said something about me not being ill enough to be on Apidra as it should only be prescribed to those under 18 or over 70? I hope they are not gonna make me go back onto mixtard again from MDI I make no bones about the fact that MDI has changed if not saved my life.

So the question is Marc,............. do you look under 18 or over 70 to get a remark like that? :D
Mind you I ddidn't realise you had to look ill to have diabetes.
I hope you have looked in your prescription packet to make sure you have been given Apidra and not something else.

Unless your pharmacist is more qualified than others, I would ignore his comments and refer back to your GP. As far as I'm aware, whatever insulin you and your care team decide on is what you need. The pharmacist's job isn't to decide if you look ill enough.

NOT ILL ENOUGH?!?!? Your pharmacist needs a good slap. You have type 1 diabetes! So the likelihood of stroke, heart disease, blindness, amputation, coma and kidney failure if you don't keep your control nailed down aren't enough? 😡

Dafne tutor mentioned this last week, i didn't because she spoke like everybody had been informed. Apparently three months worth has been destroyed due to a factory floor issue and stocks are being sent to the countries with the biggest demand, and that isn't us.

That sounds like a load of rubbish Marc, I'm 24 and started on apidra last year. If it works for you then don't let anyone switch your insulin!
