Anyone recommended to take statin when cholesterol normal (esp. Type 3c)

Following my recent blood tests my doctor wants me to come in and talk about putting me on a statin.

I've declined for several years but recently a friend had some mini strokes and so thought I should reconsider.

I looked at my cholesterol scores and they all look good to me so am wondering if others (especially type 3c) have any experience of this.

I see my Triglycerides are high and Dr Google says they can be reduced with a statin but then I imagine I'd be reducing my normal cholesterol scores too.

Thanks for looking and any experience shared.

I have low cholesterol but was advised to take statins anyway as it is recommended (due to my age and T1 Diabetes) - I have heard that some people have had problems when going on to them, but personally haven't had any adverse effects

Thanks Matt . I will check out my QRISK score to see if its jumped since I had my op. Good to hear you had no adverse effects. Regards Chris

It’s standard advice for over 40 with diabetes regardless of your cholesterol. Your total cholesterol is above the target of under 4 for diabetics though.

I was advised by my endo that everyone with diabetes over 40 is advised to take statins.
The reason for this is that our BG fluctuates more than someone without diabetes and these fluctuations puts extra strain on our heart.
However, I have also been told that the advice is based on studies with people who are overweight and do no exercise. Therefore, there is little evidence that statins are beneficial for very active people.
I pushed back for more than 15 years but, over that time, my total cholesterol crept up very slowly to just over (I forget the exact number but it was less than 4.1). I decided to “give ‘em a go” and have had no side effects. However, I have requested to reduce my dose to the minimum - for some reason, the default starting dose is twice the minimum dose.

Thanks Lucy. That is

Thanks Helli. I am very active at the moment but one day I will slow down and use them no doubt. Regards, Chris

I am type 3 c and take atorvastatin 20mg daily without any side effects.
Remember statins have two functions: they reduce cholesterol but also stabilise plaques.
I would recommend them, millions take them without problems, obviously a few find otherwise.
Good luck what ever you decide

I was at my standard GP health check today (age 48 1/2) and the chap I saw and also the diabetic reg I saw last Friday both said that they did not see any mileage in me starting on statins at this point.

My cholesterol is a little raised but they both thought as a result of the extremely high BG I currently have but both were happy to rule them out for the foreseeable.

Both said it would be a consideration in the future though but for now to keep away from them.

I would have resisted at this stage anyway so pleased they have both said that...
