Hi there, mys on has today been told that he can no longer drive, by his DSN at his annual appointment because of the seizure he had in August. He had a severe hypo which resulted in the seizure. I said to the DSN that I thought it had to be more than one severe hypo before you notified the DVLA, however she informed us that you only have to have one seizure to lose your licence. It is a bit confusing as on the DVLA website it states Epilepsy(seizures) as one of the factors which would contribute to you r loss of licence. Does anyone have any knowledge of this, how long do they normally revoke your licence for?

It was ever the case for epilepsy that you had to go 12 months without a 'fit' before applying to get it back; in the 1960's/70's hubby #1 had a pal who repeatedly used to go 11.5 months and then have another one .....

Also know now another epileptic (friend of our son-in-law) who eventually had that operation they do on your brain to 'kill' the bit that's causing it (the op they do while you are awake!) and he's been 'fit' free ever since, instead of it being several times a week. He learned to drive 3 years ago - at the tender age of 36! - and hasn't looked back since.

Your son will already have a medical case number at the DVLA cos (I presume?) he's already on a 3 year licence anyway, so I think he should ring the Medical Branch and see if he can get any info?

that is unfortunate, I know that if you have more than 2 severe hypos in a year, which is hypos needing a third party, then a revoke is put in place, so a seizure/fit, may be worse than this.............

but with any revoke, you can get the license back, at least after a medical assessment, and maybe a few months monitoring...........

if there was a fit, then it needs investigated..............

this is all relevant to hypoglycaemic episodes, if epilepsy is involved then I cant comment, good luck...........

thanks sfor that, I was always under the assumption that if a fit was due to a severe hypo, then you would have to have 2 in a 12 mth period before you lost your licence. On the website it does say epilepsy and in brackets seizures, so whether thats a grey area or not ive no idea. It does say in his medical records (the DSN confirmed this yesterday) that it was a seizure due to hypo. We are ringing them today , so see what happens. Just a bit of a shock when you arent expecting it! Hes gutted.

just thought id let everyone know the outcome, we rang the DVLA and spoke to a very nice man in the medical dept. He said , after a seizure or fit, it is a mandatory 6 month ban, but it will be taken from the date it happened in August, This doesnt seem so bad, will get his licence back in February, so could have been a lot worse fro my son.

Good! That's really not so bad then is it? - and at least we all know now .....

Pleased he's got it sorted Carol. Considering the circumstances of the seizure, 6 months is probably not so bad.

I hope he's being a good lad now and looking after himself. 🙂

Yes thanks Rob, life is one big learning curve isnt it. Hopefully he will now realise what can happen, although it doesnt always have to be your fault does it? I thought it seemed a bit harsh yesterday, when they said after one you just lost your licence. I do know that safety always has to be considered and I would be the first to not want my son to drive if I thought he was unsafe.

I hope he'll be able to get his licence back and have a clean record from then on. There comes a point for everyone when it 'clicks' that it takes a certain approach to live with diabetes. It's his own safety too, both on and off the road that will benefit. 🙂

"just thought id let everyone know the outcome, we rang the DVLA and spoke to a very nice man in the medical dept."

CarolK, I am delighted you got such a response from the DVLA, as my experience, correspondence-wise, has been one of evasion and indifference.
I have never tried telephoning because I felt I would get the runaround and anyway didn't know who/how to approach them,
Can you tell me please, did you just ask for the medical dept, and did they want specifics of your son's case and did you get any concrete advice on exactly when it would be appropriate to reapply?

Hi Stan I know I am not Carol but, last time I renewed my license it took a long time and I was concerned that my license was going to expire and I hadn't received a new one. I called the medical department - the number is on the website and they were great.

They told me that I could still drive as my application was being processed, and that they would send me a letter to confirm this in case I was stopped for any reason.

So yes I would say if you need to call them do so.

Stan - I've rarely had to phone them but when I have they've been really quite helpful. I entirely forgot to renew my licence the once! (Got plenty of time, do it later .... Eeek)

As soon as they'd received my renewal forms they said the same to me as they said to Margie, that I could drive until they said any different. I actually had the new one back after about a fortnight!

I've just renewed mine. I sent the forms off and had the response letter telling me to expect my new licence about 6 months ago. But no licence came and I forgot I'd sent for it.🙄

So I emailed them about 3 weeks ago and 2 or 3 days later a nice lady rang me up and told me I'd have to pay ?20 and send off another form. Which was a bit of a let down, but they were very efficient and very pleasant. You can contact them via the direct.gov website. Give it a try.

Rob

Sorry , only just come on site, Stan , we just got the number off the website for Medical Enquiries. The man we spoke to was really helpful, said he was sending some forms out to us in the post, but we could reapply 2 months before the licence was due, and my son could drive even if we hadnt received it. I know it sounds too good to be true doesnt it! I wasnt expecting the amount of help we received I must admit.

Pay ?20? whatever for?

They give 3 months grace for licence not arriving but after that, if you haven't informed them, it counts as a lost licence. I was expecting it TBH, even though it didn't arrive. I forgot to look out for it, so my fault really.🙄

She did say that I was legal to drive btw. Which is a bit of luck.:D

Snap LOL - it was a thread on 'my other forum' kinda like this one that made me even look at mine and realise I hadn't done it. So I'd been merrily driving here there and everywhere, obliviously ..... Gulp. As it seems you had, too! But because the new one was issued later than the original renewal date, which expired in the Autumn, the new one expires January now so at least the renewal forms don't arrive on the doormat smack when I'm packing for me olidays ...... 😱

Ooo. That's a stroke of luck. I might a few months free then.:D

I'd only moved in january last year so had to go through the process of changing the address and then 3 months later they sent the renewal forms, so I duly filled them in and sent off and just forgot on the back of having a relatively new licence in my wallet. Until we need ID to join the library last month and Sarah spotted the expiry date.😱

They say they sent it out so someone may be driving on my licence as we speak. But it'll only last 'em 3 years so might not be so attractive. And they can't be as good looking as me so the photo won't match 🙄

Thanks all, I guess I should give it a try.
My circumstances are different in that I am not renewing I want to get mine back
Six months ago I had an accident which was deemed to be due to a severe hypo, even though I did not erquire or receive any outside assistance, as a result of which my licence was revoked
One school of thought says this was one incident in many years so I should pass as fit to drive, while another says that i must have at least a year with no hypos before even applying for reistatement.
I have been unable to get any sense out of the DVLA by mail and e-mail and thus I have been reluctant to waste money on 300 number call

Never had a hypo at the wheel but can understand why they revoked your licence, a hypo with or without assistance would I imagine cost anyone their driving licence. Just hope you get something sorted soon.
