Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello there,

I was just wondering how many other people there are like me..
I'm 30 years old and size 10 / 12 and have been an obsessively healthy eater (vegan) for the majority of my 20s... and yet somehow I have type 2 diabetes (diagnosed last December).

So..

I'm just wondering why everything I read about this type says it's caused by being older and overweight - and I'm neither... AND I wondered if there were other's like me out there and what your theories may be about this.

I'm increasingly irked by the message being sent out to the general public that this is something you bring on yourself. Seems like there's more to it than that.

Also - thanks to anyone who replied to my Metformin makes me windy! post - you're all very funny. I've reduced my dose and carbs which has helped, many thanks!
BK xx

Hello Boss Kitty, and welcome to the world of stereotypes and caricatures that have most of us hopping mad from time to time.

Capepod has posted on the issue of "associated with" elsewhere on this site but it is important to remember that a significant number of Type 2s are lean and young. In addition, the majority of overweight/obese people don't get diabetes either. We are simply the "fortunate" few whose bodies decide to misbehave. Lots of work is being done to look at the genetic triggers that may factor

Whilst I was 51 when diagnosed and overweight, I had been pretty active until a few months before diagnosis when I was just so tired and off colour - it didn't help when a well-meaning practice nurse said how surprised she was that I was Type 2 as I didn't fit the profile. MY GP reckons I had diabetes for up to 10 years before diagnosed - I wonder how many of us are missed because we don't fit the public image

Hello Bosskitty

I'm also Type 2 was dianosed last April.

My theroy is it is heredity and a bit of sods law.
Granny was 60 when diagnosed type 2
Mum first child of Granny (4 children) diagnosed 42 type 2
Me First female child of mother (4 children) diagnosed 35 type 2

I was size 14 a little over weight at diagnoses - hardley obese.
Now 3 stone and 2 lb lighter size 10.

I wouldn't let reports and such bother you - you know yourself how good you are and have been.

Here's to Type 2 Young, old, Fit & Beautiful girlies and boys

Do you have a family history of diabetes?

Have they done the tests to rule out type 1? there are a few people here who were initially mis-diagnosed.

I was diagnosed as a slim 15 year old, was difficult for me because I didn't feel like I could relate to type 1's or type 2's.

My thinking is that no matter what I did in terms of diet and exercise I was always a candidate for type 2 as my Mum has it, and so did her Mum and her Mum's Mum! I guess I probably didn't help matters by being overweight and over 40 when diagnosed but I truly believe I would have been diagnosed even if I was the weight/shape I was 6 years ago.
