Hi All

I am a panicked newbie(ish) I had gestational diabetes 6 years ago with my son and ended up on insulin, I couldn't get my sugars to settle no matter how good I was. (I was an overweight geriatric mum) 6 years later and 4 stone in weight loss diabetes has come back with a vengeance :( Not sure why it came back as had I lost the weight to reduce the risk!)

I have cut all of the rubbish, but still can't get it to settle. I am eating fruits and vegetables and grilled chicken trying to be as balanced as I can. Following guidance on the internet on what is best to eat.

So an example of my day is I went to bed at 5.6, woke up at 7.9. I had about 6 strawberries for breakfast and a cup of coffee (with semi skimmed milk. No sugar just sweetener in the coffee.) Now an hour later I am sweating and not feeling too good to be honest with a blood sugar of 14.3. Yet I ate strawberries yesterday with no issue.

Can anyone help a desperate ignoramus? 🙂

By the sounds of it you're at the level where contacting your doctor is warranted. (In general fruit isn't the ideal food to eat on its own, but surely 6 strawberries shouldn't be a problem (strawberries are relatively low in carbs compared to many other kinds of fruit).)

So call your GP and ask for help.

I have an appointment next week to review the ups and downs, thanks for the tip on fruit. I am trying to find something I can have that replaces the seeded bread I used to eat for breakfast. I miss toast already 🙂

I would point out that your balanced diet is right off - chicken thighs eaten with the skin would be a better choice, protein and fat are the foods you can (probably) eat. Have cream with your strawberries, avoid milk as it is sugary.
If the vegetables include legumes and potatoes then they are high carb foods.
I do agree that you should contact a doctor about this, but eating low carb until you can get sorted might help to some extent.

Yes, might well. And I agree with the idea of adding cream to the strawberries. (Nothing wrong with fruit, but they do contain sugars, as well as quite a bit of fibre and other things we'd regard as healthy. And compared to other berries strawberries seem relatively low in sugar, maybe because they're a bit bigger and more fibrous.)

I personally find strawberries raise my levels more than raspberries or blueberries.

Thanks all, because I needed to lose weight I would naturally avoid the thighs on the chicken and the skin. So this is a new way of thinking. Cream too! I would have thought that would have been worse than milk. Learning all the time, and trying to stay well away from carbs of any kind at the moment. But still learning.....

I lost 50lb eating the skin off chicken and eating/drinking cream. It is the carbs which cause weight gain and insulin release to hold fat in the cells rather than allowing it to be released for use. I was not trying to lose weight, just suddenly realised that it was gone. Milk is a solution of lactose, a sugar.

Strawberries send my BG rocketing skywards whereas blueberries, raspberries, blackberries barely register at all.

Blackcurrants are also low carb and full of goodness and rhubarb stewed with a little sweetener like Stevia is really nice with creamy Greek Natural yoghurt or cream, a few mixed seeds and ground or chopped nuts and doesn't impact my BG

Welcome to the forum @Sam Sid

You may well also be seeing significant rise from glucose released by your liver - sometimes called Dawn Phenomenon - which is an ancient circadian rhythm where the body ‘fires up the burners’ either in the early hours, on rising... or both!

Having something reasonably substantial soon after you wake (perhaps a bowl of full fat yoghurt with some berries?) can help to satisfy the liver, and switch off the flow of glucose.

Hope your appointment goes well 🙂

thank you - it turns all the usual weight loss instruction on its head, but I suppose my body is working differently now so I suppose I should too 🙂
