A standard question of mine on any fora I am new to 🙂

Any one else on here an amateur radoist (potentially incorrect technical term)? Been licensed since 2013 and gained my M0 in 2015 and have become a hopeless CW addict since 2022.

If course if no one else is a ham none of this will make sense

"Would you stop playing with that radio of yours, I'm trying to get to sleep!". Sorry: couldn't resist it!

I used to work with a guy who had done ham radio in the past. He knew Morse Code and the Phonetic Alphabet.

"Would you stop playing with that radio of yours, I'm trying to get to sleep!"

That clip appears at the end of a rock song, I currently can't remember which. I had no idea where it was from, Tony Handcock, now I know.

"Mayday! Mayday!"

My late brother who sadly died in his fifties was a very keen radio ham. He had conversations all over the world. When he bought his last house the most important requirement was a good place for the ariel. He was good friends with someone else in the village who was also a keen ham. We went to a ham rally to sell some of his gear when he died. He got his licence when still in his twenties. I don't know if it is still the same but he had to pass a test in morse code. When he did the test he recognised Jim Bacon a local weather forecaster also doing it. He was also keen on computers and that also grabbed his attention. He had cards with his handle to send out and also received some.

They dropped the code requirement some years ago.

Ironically I never wanted to learn CW so when I was younger didn't go for my licence. Once it was no longer required I sat the exams and for a good few years still had no interest in morse.

In May 22 though I started an online class as I had started to take an interest. Now it's all I use on air

Likewise I've spoken to people round the world in CW and by spoken, I often get into good long chats with people - sometimes coming on for an hour.

I'll be teaching another class of beginners in January, see if I can encourage anyone else to become an addict 🙂
