HI there I am not Diabetic but my little niece is. My sister is not really computer friendly so thought I would join on her behalf. My niece has only been diagnosed with Type 1 DB for about 6 months and is suffering the most awful constipation. Can anyone offer any advice about this - at our wits end.

Welcome Susan Cooper.

We're not able to give medical advice on these boards, not least because we don't know all details eg no idea of your niece's age. However, some families have found that their children with type 1 diabetes suffer constipation because either they are dehydrated, which can be treated by drinking more sugar free drinks) and / or they are not eating enough fibre, perhaps because of reluctance to eat enough fruit, cereal etc, which can cause blood sugars to peak, although as long as insulin doses and times are matched to carbohydrate intake, there's no need to limit these. If these measures of increasing fluids and increasing fibre don't work within a few days, it's time to go back to GP to ask for further guidance / investigations etc.

Hello Susan and welcome 🙂

How old is your niece ? My daughter was extremely constipated on diagnosis but she was very dehydrated so that corrected itself once she was on the correct amounts of insulin.

How is your niece's control, does she suffer high BG's? Is she a good eater i.e fruit and veg etc for fibre ?

Same experience here, due to dehydration. So much so that I think sudden uncharacteristic constipation should be a clue to GPs to test for diabetes
