Hello to all

I have been recently diagnosed with pre-diabetes, or impaired fasting, I range between 7.3 and 7.9 after fasting from mid evening until the morning. Also discovering thing like pastry and dried fruit shoot it high, still checking other foods to see how the react. Diabetes in my family is possibly hereditary, my Mum's mum was diabetic, my mum is diabetic and her two sisters are diabetic, one of my sister is also a diabetic, all type 2. Although I am not on medication as I have only just been diagnosed with pre-diabetes and therefore being monitored I do suffer quite a lot from hypoglycemia, particular in the afternoons, I get shakey and extremely hungry and crave sweet things, so I always had an idea it was low blood sugar, which is inconsistant (I think, not sure) with diabetes. (unless on medication) Yesterday I did quite a lot of exercise, and got the low blood sugar symptoms, so I took my blood sugar and it was 5.1, which is marvelous for me, as usually after 2-3 hour post meal it is between 9-14, this was also about 5 hours after eating 3 wholemeal toast and a cup of coffee. Therefore I know exercise helps to control my blood sugar and bring it down, but can't understand why it is hight after fasting. I am overweight but no where near obese, and I have to admit to not taking regualr exercise. I am wondering if some exercise before bed would help my fasting levels?

Hi, sounds like you are working really hard on things. There is no reason why you shouldn't have the things you enjoy in moderation.

Although fruit carries its own natural sugar, I find it helps to keep some handy as an apple is better than a couple of mars bars. I like sweet things, so sometimes need a couple of biscuits or some chocolate to satisfy my mouth.

I was advised not to do strenous exercise before bed, but I know people who do. I do tai chi which is very relaxing and there are people who do yoga and find that helps. I'm not sure exercise before bed will halp your fasting levels, but I'm sure someone else will be able to help with ideas on that.

Normal range is considered to b between 4 and 7. If you feel like you've had a hypo ay 5.1 it may be because your system is used to being on the high side and is now working to adjust to the lower numbers.

Hope that is of help

I'd agree with Caroline, if you are getting hypo-like feelings at 5.1 it suggests that your blood glucose readings have generally been higher than the normal range for some time. Your body has a 'Oh, what's going on here' emergency switch which triggers the symptoms if BG is lower than usual and that 'switch' point can gradually creep up (or down!) if the body gets used to being high much of the time.

If you reduce the amount of carbs you are eating (all carbs, not just sugar) your 'switch' should reset to the proper level after a week or two.

Your raised levels in the morning might be due to 'dawn phenomenon'. The body carries lots of stored glucose (in muscles and the liver) which it can release to give the body a boost. Very useful in many circimstances (otherwise you'd need a few jelly babies every time you suddenly had to run to catch the bus), but the liver also has a habit of releasing a boost of glucose just before dawn so that our cave dwelling forbears can dash out and catch woolly mammoths first thing. Not so handy now adays, especially if your body is struggling to metabolise carbohydrates and sugars generally.

Welcome to the forum taw1963 🙂

With that much diabetes in your family I would see if your GP is aware of strongly hereditary forms of Diabetes such as MODY. (don't let the name confuse you, it can be found in older people too)

Thankyou all for you help and advice 🙂

Yes I may try some gentle exercise before bed time to try and see if I can release some of the stored glucose. My main problem is the fatigue, I can hardly keep my eyes open past 10pm now, but I am usually up quite late like 2ish although I don't snack.

Because of the stored glucose, which I was not aware of is 7 - 7.9 normalish for fasting glucose? I am used to my mum's blood sugar being way to high hers is always through the roof and she is on insulin and metaformin, as are my aunts. My mums is sometimes is as high as 18 in the mornings.

Thankyou Mark, shall look up MODY 🙂

A non-diabetic will probably be around 4 mmol/l in the morning. My PCT recommends that you should be between 4 and 7 in the morning for fasting.

So, yes 7 - 7.9 might be a little high!
